I did the exact same thing.
The hobbit is the best book ive ever read, and the only big book ive ever finished reading.
I'm like 3/4 of the way through fellowship of the ring but I doubt ill ever finish it.

The differences are pretty large, but you have to remember that's how it is with every book to movie. Unless you want to sit through a 5 hour movie, they can't have every detail. Just read the book and enjoy it.
