Author Topic: My loving harddrive...  (Read 1403 times)

...gave up on me. i cannot go anywhere apart from a couple of folders without getting an I/O error.

But the main problem is:
I had windows XP on it and i only have one key. If i format/use another drive and install windows on it, will it accept my key?

Uh...You posted this twice.

I believe it can under certain circumstances. If I remember correctly, you just cannot change your motherboard without your windows key being void. It goes off of the motherboard because its the least changed item in a computer compared to something like a hard drive or CPU.

I could be wrong though. You should probably upgrade to windows 7 anyways.

It's worth trying. Not as if something bad will happen if it doesn't work.

i already tried installing it to another hard drive and it didn't accept it.

strange thing though: i got my key from my laptop which used to have XP (its now got linux on it) and it worked on my desktop...

i guess if you can't afford a new OS you could use linux or something and maybe try to get support from microsoft

yeah i just posted on microsoft, waiting for a reply...

i had linux previously on that machine (ubuntu 10.04) but ironically it ran slower than XP... (or atleast the games did, but i probably should of installed the proprietary drivers...) i guess i wont really have a choice though if this dosent work out.
