The debt was already climbing at a huge rate before his presidency.  There's no way you can just stop the debt from climbing due to the outstretch military and fiscal mismanagement without having to also spend money to ensure people don't live stuffty lives and then don't vote for you again so you can then make more changes and sign away more freedoms.

tl;dr:  can't stop the debt climb in 4 years
