I had a girlfriend a few years ago that was okay, we both played games online, and we liked the same things, etc. But now she's some anime whore.

Going up to a chick and saying "ey I know you probably dont even my name yet, but wanna go out?" would be more creepy than having her add you as just another one of her probably 500+ friends. I'm not much of a socialite but I can figure that out.
