Headphones won't work?

I just got new headphones, and when I plug them into my laptop headphone socket, they won't work. Please help

are you sure your sound isn't muted?

are you 100% sure your laptop's port works? have you tested it with something else?

my sounds are not muted.

my laptop's port works. my old headphones broke last time: they woulden't fit into the sockets they just fell out when i plugged them in
