Author Topic: an assignment I had for English  (Read 831 times)

so I had to write a "600-1000 word" paper about what happened to Pearl after the end of The Scarlet Letter. that book was kinda lame, but w/e.

At the end of The Scarlet Letter, there wasn’t much clarification on what happened to Pearl. Did she move to one of the properties she inherited and start a family, or did she die young at some point after leaving New England with Hester? Maybe, she could have given away all that she got from Chillingworth, and lived off money and in a house that she earned herself. The citizens didn’t think of that as very likely though, when they took into consideration the expensive gifts and letters that Hester received, assuming those letters were from Pearl. Nobody actually knew, all they had to go by were their rumors.

But none of the rumors that they had were entirely true. Pearl did sell the Boston property from Chillingworth, and she did eventually start a family. Of course, she did die as well, but that was much later in her life. The letters and gifts that Hester would receive after her return were, in fact, from Pearl. Most of this would not happen until several years had passed after she left.

After leaving New England, Pearl and her mother moved to the property in Boston that Chillingworth had left to the little girl. They were both happy to finally be out of that city, especially Hester. In Boston they stayed for many years, meeting new people, socializing with them, and making friends. Compared to the way they were in New England, this was a huge change for them, but refreshing. Soon after Pearl became an adult, she decided she was bored with that city. She wanted to move to the property that she owned in England. But Hester didn’t wish to leave the New World, so she said goodbye and went back to New England, where she would stay for the rest of her life.

Pearl sold her Boston property for some extra money to get on a ship in the Boston Harbor that was headed for England. It was scheduled to leave about a week after Hester had left. Pearl hated that trip. The boat was dirty, there were rats everywhere, and the movement caused by the waves made her sick more than once.  They could not get to England fast enough, and it felt like she was on that horrible vessel for years, although it was only several months. But, it was cheap, and left her with even more money to use once she arrived in Europe. She didn’t really need that money; she had plenty more to spend. Perhaps a part of her just felt like she it would be a good experience. Regardless of her reasons, Pearl regretted making that decision very much.

Once in England, she immediately searched out her land. It wasn’t difficult to locate, with the help of locals. After she found the home, though, she didn’t talk to many people here. There’s no telling why, she may have not enjoyed the social life of hers in Boston, or perhaps she didn’t want to get too involved in her new neighbors’ different customs. Instead of talking to people, she sent the letters, much like journal entries (other than that she sent them monthly rather than daily), and the gifts to her mother.

At a market one day, she did find a nice man who was also unique compared to the citizens of England. They got to know each other very well, and eventually the man proposed, and she accepted. Before long, the couple had a daughter of their own. Pearl mentioned the girl in a letter she sent to Hester, and she even made an elegant dress for the child. The dress was beautifully embroidered, even more than the garments she had made for Pearl when she was young. Pearl and her husband, with their daughter, lived comfortably off of her inheritance, and had a very happy marriage. When they died, their offspring inherited for herself what was left of the original inheritance. On their shared gravestone, after the usual information, was engraved:

“On a field, sable, the letter A, gules.”

you'd kinda have to have read the book to know wtf I'm talking about, but I'm sure it's required reading in most american schools. forget I made typos tho. like on the one I turned in, the "shared" and "usual" in the last sentence of the next-to-last paragraph were actually "share" and "usually," respectively. oh god that sucks. I hope she doesn't care much

my mom says it's exceptional. but idk man. this is something I wrote at like 4:00 AM in the total time of about two or three hours. if this is exceptional then maybe I should start writing late at night more often

it's 681 words, btw
