Help me with my engineering project.

I have to make a circuit in my engineering class so I can have a motor with variable speed.
I know how to connect a motor, but how do I connect it so I can change the speed in which the motor spins? I know I need to use a variable resistor but don't really know how to connect it. Ideally, you'll draw me a circuit diagram, but thats asking a lot.
