i believe it uses liberation sans by default if it's installed, on linux.

EDIT: sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
enter that in a terminal and you should see windows fonts instead.

I didn't even have to do anything other than install the fonts. Chrome was defaulting to ugly fonts cause I didn't have the preferred one installed.
