oh goodie
first do a blinking light to get your self good with the language
make sure you have a few breadboards hundreds of jumpercables and tons of LEDs/Resistors.
Get a Servo because they're cool.
I did something where I click a button turn off the lights and leave the room for dinner and when I come back I turn on the lights and it turns on my computer.
You should probably get your self good with multiplexing because that is important.
Try doing something like turning a potentiometer to determine the brighness of an LED.
Try using a buzzer. Try messing with photocells.
Try something like what I did, Arduinos are supposed to interface your code with real world objects.
I got the blinking light to work :D
What's multiplexing?

nice.
Floppy drive songs.
or laser harp.
oh man I want to do floppy drive music
but I don't have floppy drives lol

buy it now, they're like 10 bucks
bidding, the shipping is like 3-4 times more than the drive ;-;
those are the newer ones, buy the old dinosaur ones that growl at you.
also, BIN is a good bet for these.

I don't see any dinosaur drives.
and what is this BIT you speak of? a brand or something?

they are old and generaly out of production...
Try this instead:

oh that's pretty sick
I'm gonna look around a bit more and see if I can find anything useful to do with it
otherwise, I think I'll build the laser harp

Adafruit has a fantastic guide on how to get started with Arduino.
