Get a flash drive and put ubuntu or damnsmalllinuxon it and copy your vital files over to your external hard-drive.

EDIT: you say it's a laptop. Just unscrew one of the panels off on the bottom. There should be one for RAM, one with your HDD, and maybe others.
Laptop HDD's can be plugged in to desktop PCs fine.
