Chiptune Music MegathreadWhat the forget is chiptune?Chiptune is a genre/subgenre of electronic that focuses on either A: music made with a soundchip or B: songs made with squarewaves, sawtooths and sinewaves. It's found in many 'old-school'/retro games and systems, eg the NES or C64.
Why the forget does anybody listen to this outdated stuff?Because it's
so loving good.
Are there any loving places I can listen to this?Shoosh yeah,
(some of the following artists are from
Skateaton's thread)
MODArchiveOld-School 'scene action! (WARNING: MILLIONS OF AWESOME SONGS AHEAD)Get yourself a
module player (I prefer XMPlay) and get your scrawny ass down here for some nice demoscene/chipscene action.
(Some artists I recommend for good chiptunes are
Radix,
Maktone,
Svenzzon and
Estrayk (Note that not all of these's guys songs are chiptune or strictly chiptune, but most of it is).
AnamanaguchiI don't really know much about these guys other than that they/he/she made the soundtrack for Scott Pilgrim TG which one of the songs was used in Eksi's Chocolate Bar so I'm sorry.
Keygen JukeboxTBH this site grinds my gears. It does not give proper crdit to the artists, is useless for finding the same artist's songs and is really only useful for mp3 versions of modules.
If you've gotten a module player like I loving told you to, you'll want to go to
Keygen JukeboxHere you can find the original song names, the correct artists, more of their songs and other nice stuff. Please use this site instead.
4-MatOne of the more well known demosceners. Apparently still makes music (nobody loving told me about this!! wtf.....).
MODArchive selection of his songs.Static TacticsOne of Blockland's own chiptuning groups, if not the only group. Honest-to-god modules and lots of chiptune loops straight from the minds of our own dear forumers.
ElectrkA specific [ST] memeber who has made a lot of songs, not only chiptune but other genres as well. Check him out!
Bit Shifter(Requested by Momentum)
"An electronic musician based in New York City, Bit Shifter explores high-impact, low-res music produced using primitive gear and synthesis as a deliberate aesthetic choice. Adopting a distillation of the less-is-more philosophy, Bit Shifter operates with a standard Nintendo Game Boy as a means of exploring the aesthetics of economy, pushing minimal hardware to its maximum."
(because I know nothing about him)
Kubbi(Also requested by Momentum)
Appears to be some dude who makes songs for various subgenres of chiptune so
forget getting anything good for those who like dubstep, edm or any other major kind of electronic this would be a good place for you
Awkward Terrible(Requested by Skateaton)
That's some nice stuff! Can I make my own?You sure as hell can, bro. Check it:
Three nice tracking programs. I'm not going to write out a whole page of stuff you can look up yourself, so if you're really interested in this read documentation and stuff like that.
Ho boy!
Yeah.
If I make music, could I have mine put here?
Yeah, post a link to your page/download/whatever and it'll go here.
Current songs:
More will be added later/when they happen because my internet is not being good euagh.
I don't really have anything else to put here. Feel free to suggest stuff though.
In the meantime, enjoy some mp3s of well-known C64 chiptunes I recorded. I apoligize for the skips, I'll try to fix those sometime (stupid .sid files...)
