Author Topic: Blockland's Current Engine vs Newer Engine  (Read 1264 times)

I know you guys hate these topics, I am not proposing the engine should be changed as Blockland's engine as of now is pretty damn good and lovey if it can support Shaders, at least IMO. I just have a couple of questions between the engine we are on now and latest Torque3d engine.

1. What engine are we on? Are we on 1.3, 1.2? People have said Blockland has been modified so much it is its own engine, what's that?

2. Would the Torque 3D engine allow more lights to be rendered/visible (we can have 7 right now I believe)

3. Would we have a larger brick limit (I know brick limit has to do with packets, but is there a max brickcount that the engine itself can handle or no?)

4. Larger Datablock limit?

5. Have more detailed weapons/DTS models?

6. 64bit support/more use of cores? This is extra and isn't really needed but I am just wondering.

I think those are all of my questions for now, I am hoping someone expierenced with torque or game engines can answer my questions. I have a final one actually and it's how does "porting a game" work? Do you just open the file from the old engine and import it into a new engine or do you to start from scratch?

People have said Blockland has been modified so much it is its own engine, what's that?
They mean that Badspot has modified the engine itself plenty of times.

Like the source code?

1.3 IIRC
Badspot might have updated it but I don't know

I'd estimate that it's 85% the stock engine

2. Would the Torque 3D engine allow more lights to be rendered/visible (we can have 7 right now I believe)

It's not an engine limitation.

3. Would we have a larger brick limit (I know brick limit has to do with packets, but is there a max brickcount that the engine itself can handle or no?)

This is a RAM and GPU case.

4. Larger Datablock limit?

I'm pretty sure this is a RAM and networking case.

5. Have more detailed weapons/DTS models?

What do you mean?

6. 64bit support/more use of cores? This is extra and isn't really needed but I am just wondering.

This is either just how the engine was made or Badspot refusing to compile a 64 bit version.

Am i the only one who thinks that whenever Altiris makes a thread its always about

1) Something that has been confirmed not to happen
2) Something really old
3) Something that has already been dealt with and he was too lazy reading and didn't understand?

Just saying.

I agree

This has been brought up a hundred times already, and has gotten the same answer every time.

Badspot and kompressor are unwilling to move to a new engine. That's all you need to know for this topic.

If you want to know more, look for it.

You can already have much more detailed models already, people just make them blocko because it fits.

More detailed models will begin to lag a server if they are spammed, and they usually don't fit the style of everything else in the game.

(IE: You rip a lambo out of Gmod, and spawn 50 of em, the engine might have trouble rendering all the shadows/faces for those vehicles.)

Torque 3D is more limited now than it used to be.  (no mac version or opengl support)

I seen somewhere long ago that baddy thinks 64-bit might be a good idea but I haven't seen anything new about it since then

As I well know, Badspot is no fool, if he think he can make the game far superior by having a stronger engine, I'm sure he will. I said far superior for a reason. If such a change only minorly helps who cares. You shouldn't say its not going to happen just as it stands, the majority doesn't need a better engine.

Like who builds up to 256,000 bricks anyhow. Most of the most interesting builds have 50k max.
Not allot of people have extremely complex models for their minigames.
And as for cosmetic appeal, shaders is fantastic and doesn't need a new engine. I'm sure other graphic changes won't as well.

Besides, Badspot rewrote, and wrote lots of changes to get shaders going. He is probably well capable of streamlining this engines code and making it better to what it is now. Who needs to spend thousand some dollars on something you can do for yourself.

Can you give me some links where are all of my questions have been answered? Thanks

If you actually read the thread instead of just reading the title and posting your opinion before hand you would know that I am not asking for the engine to be changed. How do you know if I am not working on a game similar to Blockland/building (I'm not) that would use the T3D engine. Maybe I want to know some of its limitations, which are all of my questions.

Chances are you'll never make a decent game so why bother?

I said I wasn't making one, it was an example, why do you need to be a richard about things.
