Author Topic: Headset recommendations?  (Read 707 times)

I'm looking to by a new headset for around $60.  I currently have this Logitech one but I'm selling it to a friend.

Want:
-durability
-comfortableness
-good mic quality
-covers entire ear

Doesn't matter:
-Wireless or not
-volume control on headset
-brand (I like Logitech but there higher end stuff is a bit to expensive)

There was literally a thread about the very same topic 2 days ago. Use the search button.

Anyways, I'll repeat what I tell everyone who asks this:
1) Stay away from gaming headsets. They are overhyped pieces of junk.
2) Get a headphone + a mic. You'll get much more band for your buck.

For example:
Cheap microphone ($2.31) + Takstar HI2050 ($49.76)
Basically my setup. The sound in those headphones is amazing for the prize. We're talking premium audiophile quality sound here. The mic isn't phenomenal, but the sound quality is very okay for the price. Voices are clear and easy to understand, but there is a tiny bit of background noise. Still, the quality is more than good enough for Skype / Teamspeak. I just wouldn't record my next album with it. The sound quality from your $60 gaming headset is not going to be any better. I can send you a recording for audio quality, if you want.

Or:
Antlion ModMic ($35) + Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250 Ohm ($180)
This combo will beat the living crap out of every gaming headset out there. Yes, the microphone is expensive. And yes, the headphone is also expensive. But this was just a suggestion for a high-end set, to show you what can be done.

On the headphones+mic thing, some streamers who have headsets use a separate mic for better quality. I've never tried it myself but it does seem beneficial. If you're insistent on having a single item, you can try a SteelSeries headset. the 4H (I use this one) is $40 USD and the mic is retractable.

IMHO I would use separate mic and headphones.

Superlux HD668b (~$50) + Logitech USB Microphone (~$13) = ~$63

Signed, your local audiophile.

That ModMic thing looks loving amazing. Is it really as good as it seems?

Agreed. Though I've heard that the Takstar headphones are a bit better than the Superlux's. Superlux is still a good choice if you're on a budget, though.

I don't have it, but I would have bought it if the shipping to europe wouldn't be so damn expensive. The sound quality is very good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CEbb14VTRY

By the way, that $2 mic from DealExtreme doesn't sound too bad either. I have the SKU 42965 (see video)
