its not a real term. it was created for the use in sensationalist tv news like back in the 80s.

The Germans came up with the term with the StG 44. The media just uses the term to scare people to make something like an ar15 sound like a weapon of mass destruction.

Gun control doesn't work, and it never will work. Besides, the government's idea of an "assault weapon" is if it has an attachment like a scope or pistol grip, and not, you know, a weapon being called an AR-15 ASSAULT RIFLE!
