let's say you normally use two watts per second (this is completely hypothetical and far from accurate), and the person who supplies that has gotten used to it
if you stop for five minutes, he would probably not assume that it was going to last and stop supplying it, but let's say he did
when you began using 2W/s again, he may need to put out more power than usual to get that started back up, but the fact that he didn't put out any for the past ten minutes would definitely make that meaningless
and certainly he would not have ended up using more total power than if he'd never stopped
