Look for eMachines. They're cheap and high quality. I've had my current one (e725-4520) for probably 4 years now, and it works great still. It was on sale for $300 at Walmart.

Most laptops allow you to swap out the Optical Drive for another Hard Drive bay, why not have both?

I'm one of those archaic people who still buy CDs unfortunately.
