So what if the police wear military grade body armor and drive around armored vehicles. The reason for that is because of the north Hollywood shoot out back in 1997. When the north Hollywood shootout happened, LAPD only had only had light vests, a handgun, and a shotgun. The two bad guys had home made body armor, and illegally modified AKMs and HK91s. The irony was that it happened in one of the most liberal places in California and also the assault rifle ban of 1994 made them illegal to have at the time.
