I keep wondering why a lower view distance increases shadow quality, yet further makes it look worse.

This is kind of funny how this thread got bumped so randomly.

I keep wondering why a lower view distance increases shadow quality, yet further makes it look worse.

With a lower view distance, the shadowmap needs to cover a smaller surface area. Doing so doesn't change the shadowmap size though, which means that a larger shadowmap will be used to cover a smaller area, resulting in much higher precision shadows.
