maps were removed because it was slowing down blockland's development, the replacement for removing the maps was the shadows/shaders.

Stop whining and embrace it.

Maps and interiors slow down development by having horribly messy code, and since those were removed, updates have been speeding up. Maps were frustrating when they didn't align to the brick grid, ugly as forget, and a lot of them felt too constricting. For example, Bedroom had somewhat little building space and the terrain outside was useless. It also encouraged builders to be lazy.
