Like the glowsticks add-on.
As far as I can tell it has to do with the model, since I plugged my models into the glowstick script and they did not have the same glowing effect.

when exporting, go to the materials tab, select the material you want, and choose "self illuminating"

make sure you select your model in object mode, press control+a and "Scale and Rotation to ObData", otherwise you will get lighting issues.
