how do i make the most viewed pages thing go away on chromium

on the most recent version of chromium, specifically
i just updated it and i want to know how/if i can get rid of the "most viewed pages" thing on the new tab page

this thing

on the old version i was using, you could just close all the little windows and eventually they would all be blank and there'd just be a grid of gray squares, and occasionally one of them would come back but it can just be closed and it goes away
on this version however, if you do that they just keep coming back

i mean this isn't really a huge problem, i'll be able to get used to it if i can't get rid of it, but i liked having it the way it was before
and yes i did google it but i didn't find anything helpful

Does the new version have the apps page? If so, you could just switch to that and have that as the default instead.

anyways the reason i don't want it there is because it's unnecessary
it's quicker to just go to the bookmarks bar if i want to go to a page i visit often, so there's no point in having 8 things cluttering up the page (although i guess the gray rectangles that used to be there could also be considered "cluttering up the page", but not as much)
