The problem is the following: none of the selection mode boxes are checked when you go to edit mode, which is strange.
Note the red circled area. Normally one of those options are selected. The three dots are for selecting vertices, the diagonal line lets you select edges, and the triangle means you can select whole faces.
Click one of them and you should be fine.
