The quickest way is using a magnet. Although it is the least recommended way as you can break the drive.

i have some torx sets and i just open up the drives and let dust settle on the platters.

the platters are positively charged (+) and the dust is negatively charged (-). it essentially completes a short circuit and forgets up the drive.

Or use a magnet.

or use a sledgehammer.
Or use a sample of trinitrotoluene. That's more entertaining.

alright now you win. that would be entertaining.

replaced OS on it with elementary OS, windows is gone

i'm actually glad about that because it was insanely slow because I had too much crap

To be honest a fresh install of windows is probably your best solution because there is more support for it and your first recourse of troubleshooting isn't opening up command prompt and entering commands that you don't really know how to use.

I would never consider running linux primarily until I take a Linux+ class.

i'd just never run linux at all unless it's on a server.

i can't use linux for my day to day stuff so i'm sticking with windows.

the problem is (if I didn't say it already) it's a laptop that came with windows 7

i don't have any windows setup so I'm stuck with it for now

laptops usually come with install disks for the os
but i guess in your situation you are kinda forgeted unless you have another install disk lying around from a previous computer and your serial number is on the laptop.

...but there's no disk in the drive or usb plugged in
Exactly. It's trying to boot from the drive but there is nothing to boot so it stalls.
Keep spamming F8 or F2 or whatever it says to when booting up to enter BIOS and change the priorities to Hard Drive first.

lol wait until someone calls you up and you get there and have no idea what to do

Unless you deleted every partition on the drive there might still be the factory install partition at which point you might be able to install the os

i'm just gonna lock this because there's no need for help

the hard drive's fried, I've checked every area
