Author Topic: Server OS  (Read 510 times)

I have an HP Pavilion a750y, I wan't to use it for my Server computer.

What do you suggest for a Server OS? Are Server OS free? Do they require internet or some sort of cable?

My PC has 1GB ram, and a 70GB HDD (I have a 500GB HDD with no OS I will probably use instead)

It doesn't have a Wireless Network Drive.

linux is popular for servers (not sure which one would be best though)
so is windows server
but windows server is really pricy

1gb seems a bit small for a sever computer

it's plenty if he uses a linux distro

depends on what kind of things you're using it for. like if you were just gonna use it to host a website, not much is needed

I will be purchasing more cards soon, I have 4 slots left for RAM.

Linux sounds good,

Windows server doesn't support my CPU speed.

Arch Linux base would probably be best. However, it is very hard to use. There is a graphical installer for it though.

And make sure to study up on your Unix commands. They can be hard to understand at first, but you will get the hang of it.

eh depends what he wants to do with it. For a server, that's more than enough to host a game server, a website for it, and a teamspeak.

What are you hosting with it?

I think he wants to use a laptop as a server though.

HP pavilion is a Desktop,

I need a Server computer for connecting all my files from multiple computers on to one.
I also need it for BL servers I make.

Windows (7 and above, I think) has a built in peer-to-peer file sharing feature called HomeGroups
Older versions can also just use network drives

In this case whatever OS you have on it already would be fine. You might want a gb or two more ram, and what is your CPU right now?

If you have a poor CPU and are bent on hosting Blockland with a lot of players, I will go so far as to suggest Windows XP or even 2000. Wine is extremely inefficient with the CPU when running Blockland.
