Author Topic: Buying rights to old or abandonware games  (Read 1342 times)

anyone did this before or saw someone do it? what is the price range? i was thinking if i manage to rank up some $$$ i could call up EA to make an offer on need for speed 2 and need for speed 1 and then patch them up and make them freeware

like $1000 would that be appropriate for one of them or both? given they dont even run let alone install on windows 7 and they are pretty old 1995/1997 and i wont turn profit from them

i dont think nfs 2 is abandonware but its pretty damn old. the first nfs game is abandonware

risky business or not?

basically if it's abandonware they probably won't sue for copyright so they wouldn't give a stuff, but EA might be greedy bastards about it

i would try and check with EA themselves if you could to make sure because they still own the copyright to it but might not care if you did something with it

so basically you might be able to do it for free depending on if they care about it anymore

what a waste of $1000

what a waste of $1000

yeah but i dont have the source code for the game. thats the main reason for purchasing the rights for a game, you get the code behind it. without that i cant do anything to the game

i would expect ea to be greedy and ask for like a gajillion dollars for their hot franchise but going over 1000 for a game is absurd. who knows they probably could give it for like 100 dollars if they didnt care about it anymore.

what im worried about is that some cool games like re-volt got bought already but nfs 1 didnt. and its a pretty famous game, it probably made more sales than re-volt. it might not be bought by someone already because ea probably asked for way too much

Here's an idea: ask them how much it costs and be surprised that you will never be able to afford it

Would love to see a patch, since I own a CD copy of SE and II
