and the make/model names on cars are equally stupid
Well, with both naming systems, once you figure out in general what's going on, it's easy to figure out everything. Also trial and error works.
I feel the real names are better because you don't have to come up with some system for generic naming like you see in T+T. "Military SMG," for example, doesn't tell you much. Which military is this? Which SMG from that military is it? It could mean anything from MP5 to Uzi to SR-2 Veresk. A generic naming system really works best with something like Gravity Cat's Default Weapons where there's only a few of each type of weapon.
A bit more on topic, this looks pretty good, and I'm looking forward to this pack.
