lightning struck a tree near a control outlet in our old sprinkler system and it went all the way back to the control panel and shredded it and blew half-melted pieces of plastic in a 40 foot radius all around it

I was looking out the front room window when I was a kid and it was opened during a storm. Everything suddenly went white and there was a deafening crash. After the storm was over, we saw that the neighbor's tree had fallen (from a lightning strike) onto their patio wall less than 10-20ft from the window I was looking out.
