Author Topic: help psu problem  (Read 898 times)

I think my psu may have gotten damaged by short burst of power.

My psu plug is loose and does not "lock" into the psu so today when I was doing some stuffs on the pc I accidentally moved the wire with my foot and the screen went black and I found out I took out the plug by accident. I tried putting it back in but it would go back into a slanted position and I hear this weird electric sort of noise when I try to adjust the plug as if it was like when you put a plug into a socket but like half way or 3/4 of a way you hear this shocking electric noise and may see a spark of electricity. It was like that. Just wondering if anything bad will happen.

Also, I couldn't find my answers anywhere else. But you guys are like the comp technicians.

EDIT: Needed to use tape since I got frustrated.

EDIT again: Now I cant print anything :C, shows up a window then closes really fast.

EDIT v3: Now my computer hangs alot

Replace the PSU as soon as possible or else you got a fire risk. Tape might be capacitative so that is dangerous too.

Please get a new PSU. Tape is not an okay fix.

always go bigger than you need with psu's and get the most brick looking one out there, don't skimp.

I dont know it wasnt really a loud shock I just heard a little "ziiip ziiip" everytime I adjusted the wire + Im using electrical tape

Is there any symptoms in the psu I can look for? Like burning or something. Also my computer is hanging for a short time after rebooting.

take a metal rod and stick it in one of the openings while turning it on. the shock while minimal, wont harm you but it will go through you, into the ground and out of the house which will reset the psu and rid it of the ghosts hiding inside of it that are messing with you

how much watts is it.

no real test. if it starts up it works. but if you had one of the power plug pins remove and placed back in i would be scared to even use it. psu's have their own breakers that will go off if they blow up. but i dont trust em. my comp is to valuable to risk it.
if it was any other part, i would risk it till that part officially died. but i wouldnt do this for a psu lol, that risks frying other stuff.

you could get a 600w psu for 50 bucks nowadays. much safer

Your making me panic, but anyway its 450w and is fairly new. The plug is not fried and I dont smell anything burning. Computer starts up.

Ok, just for the safe side im not using my computer right now. I will just ask some real-life computer tech and show him later on. Locking.

Also I will post a thread if it blows up so that you guys wont stress out that it did explode lol ok thanks.
