PC is a better long-term investment, in the long run you'll save more than console users, but that isn't immediately apparent due to the higher entry cost. Steam and GOG's sales however, drives the costs of games pretty low, and the sales are plentiful. It'll add up to less than what you'd spend on a console over its lifetime.
Consoles are a better short-term investment with their lower entry cost, however, the games don't go on sale too much and the sales aren't as drastic as on Steam or GOG, meaning you'll usually pay $50-$60 a game, adding up over time, plus the extra money you have to spend if you're on XBL or PSN for multiplayer.
