Make sure to have the building essentials: duplicator and fillcan.
I find it very handy to build objects inside a mod terrain brick or a zone, mainly because you don't need to worry about supporting bricks.
Build "props" outside the build so you can use furniture/item/appliance builds more than once via duplication.
Using references is key. You don't have to copy it fully, but it's benificial if you pull styles/peices out to use. You need to be able to fill the gaps between the references. You can't rely on them fully.
Build interior before exterior to avoid space crunches/stretches. It always sucks when you realize that a room your building is going to need to be way smaller than you want.
Reduce spam: If it can be built using less bricks, then do it. Don't cut corners.
All in all I believe that's all the essentials. The only thing you can do now is to go and build as much as you can. Some things can only be learned by doing them.
