He's actually 100% right. Nvidia cards are famous for temperature issues. Don't believe me? Look up 'Nvidia fire meme' on Google images.
I've owned several nVidia and AMD cards, AMD cards always run hotter. Looking at benchmarks online I can confirm that AMD cards don't run as cool as nVidia cards (I'm not an nVidia fanboy)

AMD make significantly better cards for bitcoin mining, their workstation cards are miles ahead of nVidia in terms of price-to-performance (at work I only buy AMD workstation cards for our CAD computers). AMD cards are well regarded for having more overclock headroom than their nVidia counterparts giving them extra value. AMD cards power all three current-gen consoles. AMD is better than nVidia in terms of bringing v-sync replacement FreeSync to the market (as opposed to G-Sync which requires manufacturers to include a pricey custom scaler). AMD is advancing future gaming by developing heterogeneous system architecture and powerful APUs.
