if you don't want to check the box every time you send a message, you can change the "Save a copy of each Personal Message in my outbox by default." setting in your profile's private message options
but I don't use that setting, because a lot of the PMs I send really don't matter (like when they're short responses) and I'd rather not clog up my outbox with those
