If it isn't a mechanical failure, then use active-undelete .
My hard drive failed recently, and this got everything off of it.

It's only 20 dollars, and it works really well. As long as you have another computer that you can install it on, and a way to connect the hard drive.

thanks for the responses, i'm going to try and see if simply doing another re-wipe might bring it back just long enough to be functional.

But instead of wasting too much time otherwise, i'm probably going to just get a new drive. :(

If you have another computer I would suggest trying to plug it into that to see if you can recover some data instead of just wiping it from the get go
definitely get a new drive though, no question about that
