The issue is, there's no possible way I could get all my friends to convert to something like this. I don't care if it's got every bell and whistle possible, unless my friends start using it on their own I'm not about to tear their cold dead fingers off Facebook Messenger and try to attach them to something new.
Plus, the obvious thing here is that instant messaging is practically dead anyway. Yeah, I use steam to talk to some people, but if I need to get into contact with someone I send them a text message. I rarely video chat, but when I do I either use FaceTime or skype. I don't really care that Skype is owned by MS or a resource hog or what have you, because I close it when I'm not using it, and I only use it to video chat. Whatever metadata they can scrape from my computer in that time is theirs, it's the least I can do for them for providing a service that works and is free.
