Author Topic: Second hard drive disappears  (Read 1275 times)

to see if it recognizes the drive when its plugged back in, what do you think?
wait a few minutes after the drive disappears if you want to make sure you wont hurt anything, it surely wont be doing anything by that point

OP don't do that, play it safe

chain down your hard drive with chains, it will stop it from running away with your data.

I didn't.

So after replugging the bad HDD it's now not there at all.
Not even after a reboot.

Because of that I can't initiate a disk check on the drive because the drive technically doesn't exist to check

has it been making weird noises?

has it been making weird noises?
Nothing like that. It's just there, then it's not.

try it in another computer, or another sata port
could be a motherboard issue

I'm saving up for a new PC so I don't think I'm gonna be replacing anything/buying new parts.
I just want to know if there's more things I can check. If there isn't anything else to do, then it's just an "oh well" situation.

If you manage to get it to appear again, check its "SMART" stats through a program like Speedfan. These can tell you if the harddrive is actually failing and stuff.

I've replugged the thing in every way imaginable but I don't think the HDD's gonna show back up anytime soon.
Is there any way to run a check on a drive that isn't showing up?

see if it shows up in the bios
turn on the computer and listen closely to the drive to see if it even spins up, or if the arm is moving

What PSU do you have? Also, are pre-Windows boot times delayed?  The PSU might be a potential source of these issues. Also, I've had this happen actually several times before due to what I assume was the PSU "killing" HDDs (SSDs were mostly unaffected for some reason luckily); back up all data you care for ASAP if you ever have it working again, since there's probably a great chance it's forgeted for whatever reason.

Can you hear any clicking around the time the HDD drops?
