Author Topic: need help with changing/updating audio drivers  (Read 474 times)

so earlier today, since my mic no longer works, i wanted to switch my recording device to 'stereo mixer' so that i could at least play stuff through my computer

the only problem was, though, was that 'stereo mixer' got removed from windows 7 & 8.1, so i had to install the realtek HD audio codec from the realtek website to get the stereo mixer back

the tutorial video i watched said in the end to just run the installer and you're done

well, i did that, and when i started the computer back up i saw the normal headphone and microphone logos in the taskbar with that green installation progress in the background for a second or two. i went to 'recording devices' and it's still the same, there's no 'stereo mix' despite having followed all instructions in the tutorial. my audio drivers are also still 'high definition audio device' and nothing to do with realtek.

i've looked all over google, too, and now i'm feeling like i'm pretty dumb and i'm missing something vital here. can anybody here help out a fellow american who's down on his luck

i got it working

thanks guys

that's the problem, in most cases it was removed in windows 7 and above, and one of the ways to get it back is install the realtek audio drivers

ve tried updating in device manager with no luck, as well

Do you just want to be able to loop audio from an output to an input?

This is what I use to do it: http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Cable/
Works perfectly fine for me.

Well yes Audio drivers, also known as sound card drivers, is the software that allows your sound card to communicate with the computer. Occasionally a driver file may be corrupted or be outdated and not function properly. Uninstalling an old driver is a fairly straight-forward process with any Windows. For there, all you need to do is download the new driver from an online driver site.

Click "Start" and select "Control Panel" to bring up the Windows control panel.

Click on the "Performance Maintenance" icon and choose "System."

Click the "Hardware" tab, which will bring up the device manager. Double-click on the "Sound, video and game controller" option and double-click on the sound card to bring up the sound card properties window.

Click the "Drivers" tab and select the "Uninstall" button to uninstall the current sound card driver.

Search online for a new driver for your sound card. You can go directly to a driver download website to narrow your options. Sometimes when you buy a sound card you will also get a CD with drivers to install.

Download the driver you wish to install to your computer or load the CD and install the driver. To install, you typically just double-click the downloaded file and it will install. It will automatically integrate itself into the system once installed. You may need to restart your the computer

Good Luck

i've currently got the realtek audio codec installer downloaded, and two 'high definition audio device' audio drivers

all i need now is for somebody who knows what to do to confirm this or say it's wrong
