Author Topic: I'm making an RP server. Help?  (Read 736 times)

Actually I have made one and I've been running it for a while. It's not CityRP or DarkRP, it's just RP. No round structure, just "do whatever with the environment you're given, and shape that, too."
Seriously, it's like giving actors a brief description of a world and a half-built set, and then giving them supplies to finish the set and a blank storyboard.
What should I do with this? It's fun if people actually roleplay, but most people don't want to do that. I want gameplay in there with the roleplay. Ideas? I don't want to restrict what players can do or have set roles or anything. CityRP, from what I can tell, seems to be more like Citizen Simulator or Cops VS Robbers DM.

tl;dr for those who can't read more than three sentences:
ME MAKE RP. HOW MAKE RP FUN WHEN NOT RP WITH PEOPLE?

just give the players an objective
and include a background story that people can stumble upon

something hidden in the background events of whats going on

I like to think that every tdm server has this
one in particular does, but I am not pointing any fingers

An objective? Hm... Building a city is cool, I suppose... I have some bot spawns scattered around the edges of the map (to discourage people from exploring too far and finding the edge of the map too far from a ramp to get back up onto the map), but the bots all have shorter range or less accurate weapons than players... I should add an arena thing or something with non-Slayer bots.

Having a gameplay objective is a fair thing to work with. However, either you need to have an overarching objective with suspense and tension (x amounts of days until event y happens), or have various roles on the server, and have yourself or other admins play as various villains.

Villain characters in a role play should have high health, have rather advanced operations, and have elaborate traps/settings/environments meant to create problems for the other roleplayers. Because of the nature of the role, admins would be best suited for it, especially with an add-on that hides the "observer" message so they can spy on players and play a more devious role.
You have to trust that these people would not abuse anything, and you could have villains that are non-admin, but it will be harder to pull off villain tropes, such as being everywhere at once (teleporting), and knowing too much (spying on other players).

Suspense and tension events should be set up beforehand, but pretty much have an "on/off" switch that any admin can pull. These all need to be set up beforehand. Examples of events are: alien invasion, days until military arrives for extraction, time until flood, time until volcano erupts, etc.

think about any story you have ever read

take harry potter for instance

would any of the plot happen if lord Voldemort did not exist?

no, harry would just lead a normal wizard life

conflict creates stories, much like an objective for your server
