Author Topic: Go back to paid internship or get a different job?  (Read 394 times)

Last year I was fortunate enough to get a paid internship at an architecture firm during the summer. I've already decided that architecture is the career for me, so I hope that having such an internship pre-college is beneficial for both college acceptance and scholarships.

I could realistically only work around 15 hours/week at $8/hour there. I made a little over $1200, which I'd say is pretty good for my age in the field I was working. However, I do have college coming up in a few years, and I would like to get a car before then, if possible. I have around $600 saved up at the moment. My parents are not currently in a position to help with either college or a car.

Should I try to get a job someplace else with steadier hours or go back to the internship?

Is 15 hr/week a limit imposed by the company, or yourself for school time?
If the latter, than just stick with the internship; there's not much a high school student can do for a higher $/hr than that.

I don't think they have enough stuff for me to do to work much more than that. I know the actual $/hr won't be higher at a different job, but I would probably be able to work more hours per week.

Well a internship would look better on a resume than retail or fast food.
So you could do that, and then just find something else for the weekend

This is true. At this point, I'm leaning towards the internship again.

As a bonus, if I go that route I'll probably get to ride in the firm's owner's Jaguar E-Type again. :P

Honestly i'd stick with the internship, most logical choice. But if you wanted more time on your own before college then and only then would i work something different like fast food, cashier. Easy stuff.

I suppose it's possible as, HZ suggested that I do the internship (last year it was 3 days a week) and then see if I can get a part time job in addition to that. I don't have a car/can't drive, but there a Chick-Fil-A about 10 minutes from my house that's coincidentally near a train station. I could do both...
