the justice department issued a declaration today saying it will not renew any private prison charters, requests, etc. and will thus shut them down. the department feels that private prisons are not as safe as other correctional facilities, nor do they do a sufficient job at doing what they're meant to do. other private prisons operating on state or county levels will still exist, but the federal government apparently has its sights set on closing those down too.
