Author Topic: Any tips on learning to build?  (Read 1519 times)

Does anyone have any tips on how to get better at building, especially things like terrain? All of my builds end up looking the same every time, with 1x5x5 walls or whatever they're called. I've tried looking at everything but they always turn up looking bad.

There are a lot of tutorials but a large portion comes down to years of practice and finding your own style

don't stop building something because you think it will look bad when its done

finish it and fix it if it looks bad as long as the idea is there

Don't copy/steal others' builds, be you. Be creative, think outside the box.

Depth is key. People seem to flip the forget out whenever something is naturally square which is ironic considering you build with blocks. Add some depth to walls and the ground, dips and cbrown towns etc. For walls i would advise two layers, your structural layer and your detail layer. Also if you think something is finished but you keep trying to add things, just stop. Over detailing is bad and makes any build look shoddy.

mod ter is really easy to mess up, but I found some pretty good techniques that make it look nice

basically i use these bricks as guidelines for when i build with mod ter

wedges are good for carving out boundaries or small hills, and good for covering them too

for sloping mountains, use the flat to steep rule: start with 1/4 and work your way up, it helps make them nice and pointy

1/4 wedges make good grassy patches, they make for a decent filler to flat landscape

sylvanor's pine tree fits well with mod ter style, but that's just my preference

now if we combine all of those together...

you can put together something like this

Honestly just think about what you want to build first. Once you know what you want to build, you can then begin working and pondering on how you want it to look. What does the style need to be? The location? What do you want included in the build? What will the build be used for?

Those are all things that you need to take into consideration before REALLY working on a project. If it is something small and just dinking around, just have fun with it. Find your style.

You made that tutorial? If yes you should totally make a Modter Tutorial topic with lot's of cool tips

this is honestly a really stupid piece of advice in my opinion,
obviously yes dont just blatantly steal things and claim them as your own, but look at what other people make and what you like about other builds, incorperate whatever you like into your own build and you'll get your own style

i learn a lot more new ideas from googling around actual lego builds, than seeing what another blocklander has done.

I still haven't fully unlocked the secrets of modter lol

googling actual lego builds
forgot to say this, a great thing to do actually

Practice by remaking real life objects. You won't be detailed at first, but eventually you'll get more creative and more detailed.
Seriously though. Remaking stuff is a good way to ease yourself into building.

Also, don't go big: go small. Work on things you plan to complete, and this way you'll avoid a lot of unfinished projects. Finished projects will motivate you because you'll be able to tell yourself that the work you put into it paid off.

If you do decide to go big though, take things ONE STEP AT A TIME.
Do a little each day or each week.
Even if it's just placing a few bricks, it's STILL PROGRESS.
Doing a lot all at once can burn you out.

Building takes a lot of work and a lot of discipline, but don't be discouraged.
The only way you can learn something is if you try.

yeah don't be afraid to take some inspiration from other peoples builds.
