Author Topic: super easy maths question that i have never been able to work out  (Read 705 times)

I've never been able to work out these questions:

"A house costs £450,000 after the value has risen by 20%, find the original value"

How do I work it out as once you add 20% you can't just remove 20% from the new value since that's not how it works, thanks!

450,000 * 0.2. subtract the answer from 450k

yea u can. trust me. engineer

450,000 * 0.2. subtract the answer from 450k

alternatively  :cookieMonster:

x * 1.2 = 450,000
divide each side by 1.2
x = 375,000

or did you do it right...

no i did it right because 20% of 375000 is 75000 you monday check your work

wait akio's answer is 360,000 but frequency's is 375,000

oh I thought you want 20% of 450k

nop, the original value before the 20% increase

nop, the original value before the 20% increase

yeah to find the value you just divide both sides of the equation by 1.2 (120%) and it'll be balanced

ye frequency its most likely 375000

 450k      x
------- = ---
  1.2       1

in this case you don't even have to cross multiply, you just divide
