school internet blockers tend to be ok for the most part. blocking games, 18+ crap, that sorta thing.
however, the blocker i'm dealing with at my current school is so aggressive it hurts.
random sites are locked out, with only the reason of: non-managed
i have no idea what this means, but it's annoying. random sites that aren't harmful in any way are blocked without warning, and it's annoying.
then, there's file-type blocking, which pisses me off even more.
by default, they block exe and zip files from being accessed in browser.
why is this a loving feature? not only is it horrible to use for accessing things like projects you upload to a site, only to have it be abruptly blocked, rar and 7z aren't blocked, and sometimes it doesn't even work, so i have to guess if it'll let me download or not. i know schools don't want viruses, but this is a pisspoor way to do it
youtube restricted mode is on by default. this removes more than 75% of the website's content, even things that shouldn't be restricted.
and worst of all, sites that are blocked manually have horrible reasons for being blocked. wifislax's site is blocked for "instant messaging", and others are blocked for gambling, adult content and others when the sites have NONE of it.
oh, and public internet here is a hidden network and it's loving limited to like 50kbs. sometimes straying below that.
forget this school's internet.
