"Why are you screaming?"
"I haven't even cut you yet!"
After a mixed opening of promise and infestation along with the unbelievably high potential to make a phenomenal remake of Wes Craven's horror masterpiece through modern technology and upping the game within different aspects, A Nightmare on Elm Street is unforgivably awful and is easily one of the biggest missed opportunities of the decade and not just because it's a rehash of the original as it recreates many of its scenes in a horrible fashion, but because it builds upon absolutely nothing from the original film. Any fragments of intensity or competence are literally nowhere to be found in this tragic remake underneath the horrendous direction and completely messed up pacing while the only redeeming qualities come from some decent casting choices and thrilling moments never fully explored or brought to life as even the makeup is dreadful.
On top of all this and the endless waves of potential swirling through the air in its more dark and serious approach, which sadly failed, the painfully poor script ends up creating the most hollow characters possible, right next to all the distracting jump scares and failed attempts at conquering anything remotely brutal/fun while Jackie Earle Haley's take on evil itself, Freddy Kruger, may be the only thing I particularly found any enjoyment or interest in as he was without a doubt a great casting choice, even with his stuffty makeup, yet I still blame his few faults and the potential to be flat-out phenomenal on the terrible material he had to work with. Seriously, if they ever make another A Nightmare on Elm Street film, at least get some competence at the helm and please keep Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy since I would love to see more of him in a great Nightmare film.
Also, take a shot every time Rooney Mara looks like she wants to die.
Anybody out there that actually likes this film?
