what could be causing the issue with this item

(please ignore the horrible item holding)

normals are inverted
how would one go on about fixing this problem?

how would one go on about fixing this problem?
select the affected faces in edit mode, left toolbar > shading > recalculate normals

you can also toggle on showing normals direction in the right bar menu (google it, hotkey to open bar is n). the normals should be facing outwards.

If you use Blender, it's better to have backface culling enabled so that you have a clearer indication of how your model will look in game

select the affected faces in edit mode, left toolbar > shading > recalculate normals
Alternatively, you can select all the faces with A and press Ctrl N to recalculate the normals though hotkeys

If there's still inverted faces, you'll have to manually select them, press W for the Specials menu, then press F to flip the normals of the selected faces

to me it looks like it's just the stock and receiver that are messed up, i'd try inverting those groups and see how that looks..
