yeah that will just basically tax the website 4% of its revenue if it has any copyrighted materials or links attached to its website or something

EDIT: ok i did some digging and i don't think matthew is talking about the GDPR, despite linking to an article about the GDPR. oops. i did, however, find this which does mention a "link tax": https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20180525/10072939912/forget-gdpr-eus-new-copyright-proposal-will-be-complete-utter-disaster-internet.shtml

that sounds good for content creators but terrible for people who want to share copyrighted content. but, hold on a second--links to copyrighted material? am i reading this right? if i was a journalist who linked to someone's photography portfolio for example, would i then be subject to this tax? because if so, that's terrible.

yes. in the us though, if the portfolio owner wanted to dispute your link, they could either cease and desist you or make you pay up to a fine of $100,000 and up to ten years in jail

of course no sane human being has the time or money to take such a minor thing to court.

that sounds pretty bad, maybe MM is right this time lol

piggybacking off of Kott here

apparently you'll need a license from journalists and w/e other website to link to their articles or images or whatever. I genuinely do not understand the point of this? Are they trying to punish people for sharing information? That's the only thing I can think of lol
