Forums are definitely my favorite style of communication. Discussions that are active on forums can continue to be active forever, whereas in other environments discussions are basically forced to expire after a certain amount of time or activity. I also think that a lot of places are dropping their forums in favor of instant messaging rooms like discord, but many of those places were places that benefited greatly from the forum format. On instant messaging style systems information is simply lost to the flow of conversation, and it's often very difficult to dig up something important after it has passed by. Well-thought points of discussion can be buried in seconds by three-word messages and be completely ignored. I'm pretty sad that forums are declining so much.
I like using reddit but I can definitely say it's abhorrent as a medium of discussion. Reddit is good for content aggregation and current events... and that's about it.
