You probably are using directx 8.1 or 8.0, set -dxlevel 90 or 95 in the launch options to have either directx 9.0 or 9.0+, for the facial animations type r_flex "1" into your console.

Its DX9, but i'll do that just to make sure. I'll see what happens later today.
