Unless anyone here happens to speak Russian I don't see why they would need to know the acronym for the russian translation of "USSR", which everyone knows it as.

Well it is quite a major thing, especially historically, so it surprised me that 3 out of the 4 people I asked did not know what CCCP was.

Doesn't surprise me at all, just because they don't know what CCCP is doesn't mean they don't know what the USSR is. Do you happen to know what "national socialist" is in german without looking it up? No, why would you? You know what a national socialist is so you don't need to know its full german title.
