Someone told me that setting max players above 32 could cause problems because there were more players than open ports. I was wondering if the game could in a way be tweaked to work with more than 32 clients without lag.

$Pref::Server::Maxplayers = number;
Just open more ports for the player count you need.

Badspot's server for the v9 release had 64 players on it.

Anyway, just open 28000 to 28064 for 64 players.

So, if I just open them on my router, the game will use them automatically?

You can set the player count to whatever you want, but if you only have like... 20 ports open and have 50 slots. After you get to 20 players everyone after that will see the server dead.
A good idea would be to open maybe 64 ports, if you even need or can handle that many.
