Author Topic: Whatis  (Read 7785 times)

Thank you!
Now I don't have to be afraid of noobs and their simple questions!
How do I whatis?  :cookieMonster:

Also, Trader:
What if what you want to describe isn't related to a brick? A variable, for instance. Although, I don't know everything, so I might just be misunderstanding some things said in this topic.

Events are for manipulating and interacting with bricks.  Not for managing variables.  To use events in the way this Add-On does makes it look like its creator doesn't know what he's doing and / or doesn't understand the game's mechanics.

ahah the name of this topic sounds like it's a spam topic lol
i dont really get the point of this tho >.>

I have a suggestion; could the limit to how much writing can be in the description be longer? It just seems a little short to me.

Bump for awesomeness and my suggestion.

Trader, for what I know it's a way to make it so you can set your own "help" system without being able to code. Having it explain what bricks were means... Actually I still have no clue what you're trying to say. =/ Sorry... Unless you mean like aim at a brick and type /whatis. That would work but it wouldn't work for what this is.

Also then how do you propose someone could manage variables? Make a brick that spams the chat with all the descriptions? That would be obnoxious. (Although easily done, I suppose.) Even so, you couldn't check the description of something as soon as you found it. You'd have to go to the description brick.

/setwhatis name description

/setwhatis name description

Seriously.  If the explanations aren't actually related to bricks, this Add-On is pointless.

This is actually one of the most valuable add-ons on my RPG server, as spawning on the spawn point activates the whatis commands, and nearly everything in my RPG has it's own description. You shouldn't think an add-on is pointless just because you have no use for it, Trader.

Get out. Does it automatically detect the name or you have to set it? If not, you should make it do that.
"Get out"?

Couldn't you just have it ChatMessage instead?

This isn't an opinion issue.  Using events to manipulate things that have no relation to the brick running the event is factually handicapped and pointless.  If the event system had been intended to be used in this fashion, Badspot would have used it to set up game preferences.

Its easyer for younger and less intelligent (no offense to anyone this time) members if they have something "physical" they can work with, rather than having to update some txt file in the dark recesses of their add-ons foulder.
It also allows these to be updated quickly.
I do see a point that a server GUI by the host would make it easyer, but this allows it to be used by all clients.

Also, /whatis whatis
...
that sounds like soemthing from a really bad song...

Not to sound totally ungrateful, but I was sort of hoping for something like that. I'm happy with the way it was done, don't get me wrong, but a txt file to edit (like the server rules mod) or a GUI would be nice too.
